Chinanews, Beijing, Dec. 22 - When the public is speculating about the future fate of Yunnan Blue Green Algae1 Product Making Company, which is said to be purchased by foreign enterprises, the company has joined hands with its domestic counterparts and officially set up the China Blue Green Algae Industrial Strategic Alliance on Wednesday. Led by Yunnan Blue Green Algae Company, China’s leading company in making blue green algae products, the alliance, the first of such kind set up in China, aims to protect domestic blue green algae companies against foreign acquisition.
Recently, various media in China have given a lot of coverage2 to the purchase deal between Yunnan Blue Green Algae Product Making Company and two foreign companies in the blue green algae making industry. It is said that a Hong Kong company and a Japanese company have both indicated their intention of buying the Yunnan Blue Green Algae Product Company. The negotiation3 talks are not fruitful so far. Analysts4 say that once the acquisition deal is made, foreign companies can gain monopolistic control of the scarce blue green algae resources and therefore make huge profits in the sales of such products. The acquisition will make China suffer from the shortage of such resources and environmental pollution. At this time when the acquisition deal has not been finalized5, the recent foundation of the strategic alliance is regarded by many as a way for Chinese enterprises to fight against foreign acquisition. Three major domestic companies in the blue green algae industry have joined the alliance. They together make up over 50% of the total blue green algae products in the world, and 80% of the total in China. The foundation of the strategic alliance will help Chinese enterprises to strengthen their leading role in world blue green algae industry and expand their sales in overseas market. Blue green algae, or spirulina platensis, are microscopic6, spiral-shaped planktons existing on the earth for more than 3.5 billion years. They were first discovered in Africa in 1921 and since then, its rich nutrition has gained much attention from people all over the world.
