Chinanews, Beijing, Nov. 12 – The Finance Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) recently released an analytical1 report on China's macro economy for the autumn season. The report predicts that China's national economic growth this year will exceed that of last year and its GDP growth rate will reach around 11.6% this year. Driven by strong consumption demand, commodity prices keep rising. However, the current round of price hikes is mainly boosted by the price rise in agricultural products. It is not likely for the current price hike to develop into general inflation.
Since inflation factors exist, the prices of many goods are rising sharply. So, even if the pork price can be kept within a reasonable range, the prices of other goods might also go up in future. Currently, there is inflation pressure coming from five aspects. Firstly, production costs rise. Secondly2, demand for goods increases. Thirdly, the high economic growth pushes up the prices of goods. Fourthly, as China works hard to achieve its goal of energy conservation and emission3 reduction, this will also push up the production costs in the short run. Fifthly, the prices of some goods rise in global market, which in turn affects domestic market. Apart from these five main factors, some individual businesspeople and companies have raised the prices of their products amid the current round of price hikes to maximize profits and this, in some way, worsens the situation, the report says.
Although CPI growth is still in a moderate range this year, still the Gini Coefficient, a measure that tells people's income distribution status, has exceeded 0.4. Economists4 should pay great attention to the possible large CPI fluctuations5. While CPI remains6 at a high level, the price rise in meat might only be a beginning. In fact, any comprehensive price rise may start from individual goods during the initial stage. So, even if the meat price can be controlled within a reasonable range, inflation might also be manifested through the price rise of other goods as well. In light of this, China should pay great attention to the price changes in 2008 and take necessary measures to prevent any possible serious inflation that might occur next year, the report suggests.
