Chinanews, Shantou, November 20 – “China will continue to witness a rapid urbanization process in the next 20 years, until its urbanization level has reached 60%. By then, there will be at about 1,500 cities, and about 300 million people will become urbanites,” said Ye Yumin, a professor of the Renmin University of China, in his report at the 2007 Shantou Dialogue held last week.
According to Ye’s research, the total urban population in China had increased by 404.61 million from 1978 to 2006, while the poverty-stricken population had been reduced from 250 million to 26.15 million. However, poor urban population had increased by nearly 350% from 2000 to 2004, not including migrant workers. China should build a poverty-reduction system specifically1 designed for cities, and rural2 and urban areas should develop in a coordinated3 way.
