Chinanews, Chongqing, Nov. 21 – Recently, an environmental impact study report on the construction of a railway from Chongqing to Lichuan has passed the approval of the State Environmental Protection Administration. Chongqing municipal government is now discussing the construction issue with the Ministry1 of Railways and Chongqing municipal government hopes that construction work will begin as soon as possible, said Yang Qingyu, Director of the Chongqing Development and Reform Commission, on Monday. When construction is completed, it will take only four hours to travel from Chongqing to Wuhan by train, and ten hours from Chongqing to Shanghai, Chongqing Evening News reported.
Chongqing-Lichuan railway will be an upgraded construction of the former Lichuan-Fuling railway. The new line will extend 259.5 kilometers in total and the travel speed is designed at 200 kilometers an hour. The railway will be built with double tracks for trains driven by electric traction2. It is expected to be completed by 2010 and the total investment for the construction will reach 20.3 billion yuan. Early this year, the State Development and Reform Commission (SDRC) approved the railway construction proposal. In approving this project, SDRC said the Chongqing-Lichuan railway construction project would serve as an important part of the Shanghai-Wuhan-Chengdu railway project, a project that had already been included in the state’s construction program. When completed, it will become the most convenient way for people in Sichuan to travel to the central and eastern parts of China. Today, if people from Chongqing want to go to Shanghai, they will have to take roundabout lines and pass through various cities like Guiyang, Huaihua, Yingtan and Hangzhou, and the whole journey will last for 42 hours. With the Chongqing-Lichuan railway line, the trip will become much shorter.
