Chinanews, Beijing, December 5 – Following the Pearl River Delta1, the Yangtze River Delta and the Circum-Bohai Economic Ring, the Circum-Beibu Bay Economic Ring will become the 4th pillar to support China’s economic growth in the future.
The information was released by Wang Xu, the director of the Resources Application Research Center of the Institute of Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. According to Wang, the Circum-Beibu Bay Economic Ring will be a major concern of the central government during the 12th Five-Year Plan Period (2011-2015). Central China (with Wuhan as its core), the old industrial base in northeastern China, Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality were all expected to be the 4th pillar to support China’s economic growth, but Circum-Beibu Bay Economic Ring won the contest its advantage in having the only port of direct access to western China. Experts in the Institute of Geography propose that Fangchenggang, Qinzhou and Beihai should be combined, to help improve administrative2 efficiency and down administrative cost. By then, Beihai will serve as the political center of the Circum-Beibu Bay Economic Ring, and its major responsibility will be the development of tourism, while the other two will be made industrial towns. “Part of the Wuhan Iron and Steel Group might be moved to Fachenggang, together with its 100,000-strong wrokforce,” said Wang.
