Chinanews, Beijing, Dec. 6 – China has approved the proposal on setting up a joint-venture oil refinery1 in south China's Guangdong Province. The oil refinery will involve an investment of 5 billion US dollars. Sinopec and Kuwait Petroleum2 Corporation will be the company's major shareholders3.
In the approval letter, the State Development and Reform Commission says it wants to build an oil refinery that can generate one million tons of ethylene every year, Sinopec disclosed the news through the company's newspaper. The approval substantiates4 the plan included in a memorandum5 of understanding (MOU) signed by China and Kuwait back in 2005. The oil refinery might be able to produce 300,000 – 350,000 barrels of oil every day, a production volume that will ensure that crude oil imported from Kuwait will account for 10% of China’s total oil import.
