Dec.6 - Beijing police have eradicated1 three major drug trafficking underground markets in half year, improving social order in the capital, a public security official said on Wednesday.
In a campaign dubbed2 "wind and thunder" launched in May, police forces raided 900 houses and locations in the districts of Xuanwu, Fengtai and Haidian, seizing 630 drug smugglers involved in some 500 cases, said Che Kejian, an officer with the drug control department of Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau. Che said the detained were found carrying or trading small amount of drugs, but he did not name the types of the drugs or how much was confiscated3 in the campaign. More than 20,000 sq m of constructions involved in drug trafficking were dismantled4 in the move and the police authority held 30 lectures to the public over drug control during six-month period, according to Che. In addition, the police inspected eight areas across the city, cracking down upon minor5 drug related activities and restoring social order there. It is part of Beijing's endeavors to create a drug-free environment for the upcoming Olympics Games next year. Since the beginning of this year, nearly 100 kg of various kinds of drugs have been confiscated and more than 1,000 suspects have been captured for being involved in drug related activities, according to Che.
