Chinanews, Beijing, Dec. 14 – To many local officials, price hike has overtaken income distribution gap and corruption1 to become the most serious social problem in China. This is the first time that commodity price is listed as the most serious problem in history.
The findings were made after a research team recently investigated some department-level cadres then studying at the Central Party School of the CPC. The investigation2 was meant to find out how Chinese cadres viewed the current Chinese social situation. The first investigation of such kind was carried out in 1998 and since then, similar investigations3 were done once a year. Results of the recent investigation will be published in the "Chinese Political Leaders Forum4" journal sponsored by the Central Party School of the CPC, to serve as reference for Chinese officials at various levels. The investigation shows that compared with last year, repondents make better remarks about this year's social situation. 87.6% of the cadres in the survey judge the social situation in 2007 as “very good” or “relatively good”, while in 2005 and 2004, only 79% and 69.1% of the respondents, respectively, gave a similar judgement. With regard to problems that remain to be resolved in 2007, “commodity price” becomes the most frequently picked item among all the problems listed in the investigation, with its selection rate reaching 30.5%. When respondents are asked to pick up four items among all choices, the selection rate for “commodity price” problem further reaches 42.1%, while in 2003, 2004 and 2005, the selection rates were only 1.8%, 8.4% and 2.1%, respectively. Moreover, commodity price has risen to become one of the important criteria5 for judging social stability this year, which was quite different from previous years. This has a lot to do with the fast rising prices in housing and pork, said Xie Zhiqiang, a professor at the Social Development Research Institute under the Central Party School of the CPC, who took part in the investigation.
