Chinanews, Shanghai, January 24 – Shanghai Liquefied Natural Gas Project (LNG) was formally launched on January 22, 2007. Its third gas station will be built on Zhongximentang Island near Yangshan Port, which will import 4 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Malaysia every year after completion of the first phase of construction in 2009.
Shanghai LNG project is the third of its kind in China, after those in Guangdong and Fujian provinces. It is designed to ease the energy shortage in Shanghai and to guarantee energy security all around the country. A special port, a gas storage station and offshore1 pipelines2 will be built in the two phases of the project. When they are totally completed, more than 8 billion cubic meters of natural gas will be imported to Shanghai every year.
