A civil airport located in northwest China's Gobi Desert is to open by early summer.

一座民用机场将于夏初在中国西北戈壁滩对外开放。

According to China West Airport Group, the new facility is about 2,900 meters above sea level, and is located in Huatugou Township in the Mongolian-Tibetan Autonomous¹ Prefecture of Haixi, Qinghai Province.

It is expected to transport 90,000 passengers and 100 tonnes of goods annually² by 2020.

Huatugou has abundant natural reserves including oil and gas.

The group says the airport will greatly improve interconnectivity and the economy.
