A survey by the Chinese Association on Tobacco Control found that the public's approval ratings of Beijing's smoking ban almost doubled from 42.26 percent to 81.3 percent in the last six months.

The survey also found the public awareness¹ of the Beijing Tobacco Control Regulations increased from 43.43 percent to 82.64 percent, since the city implemented² its toughest smoking ban in June this year.

 

The Beijing Public Health Service Hotline says that it has received a total of 9,291 complaints on violations³ of the ban since it took effect. At present, the daily number of complaints has stayed around 70.

 

Wang Benjin, Deputy Director of Beijing Health Inspection⁴, says that every complaint against illegal smoking behavior reported to the hotline will be tracked. Wang adds that once discovered, the responsible organizations, including government and political organs, will be investigated and punished.

 

According to Beijing Health Inspection, a total of 4,846 organizations were found as failing to comply with the smoking ban, out of which 217 were fined a total of about 570,000 yuan, or about 89,000 US dollars.1,979 individuals received warnings, out of which 598 were fined.
