A new hotel in Manchester is being built in an innovative1 way - by using shipping2 containers imported from China.
曼彻斯特一家新式酒店正在建设之中,建造该酒店选用的材料是从中国进口的船运集装箱。
The 220 room Holiday Inn, which will be located in Trafford City, is the first so-called 'molecular3' accommodation in the North of England, with similar buildings also under construction near London City Airport.
If you're finding it hard to visualise the hotel, or understand why anyone would want to stay there, you'll probably be relieved to hear that it doesn't look anything like shipping containers once completed!
The units are assembled, pre-installed with most of their interior fittings. Then, an exterior4 facade5 is applied6 to conceal7 the origins of the accommodation, so guests will have no idea of how it started life!
Such a method of construction has the main advantage of being incredibly quick to assemble. It takes just four weeks to put all of the shipping containers into place. It also allows designers to have most of the interior work done off site, where it might be easier and cheaper to complete.
Nevertheless, the system isn't without drawbacks. It's obviously quite expensive and harmful to the environment to transport shipping containers around the world. It's also controversial to have work that would normally be done by local tradespeople completed overseas.
