Recently, a man recovered his bank deposits of 250,000 yuan (USD 36,319) as a court in Beijing ordered the bank to return the money, which was claimed by the man as vanished for unknown reasons from his account 15 years ago, reports China Central Television.
中央电视台报道,最近北京一家法院裁定某银行返还一名男子的25万元银行存款,该男子声称这笔款项15年前莫名从他的账户中消失。
According to the man, he opened a deposit account with a bank early in 1997 and put 450,000 yuan (USD 65,374) into it.
Except an early withdrawal1 of 200,000 yuan from the account, the man said he did not deposit or take out any money from then on. It was not until 2012 that the man was told that his bank balance was only an interest of around 2,000 yuan (USD 291).
The man sued the bank last year, after his talks with it resulted in nothing.
The bank said that the man had withdrawn2 his remaining balance of 250,000 yuan early in 1997, without providing any proof.
Given the long history of the account, the transaction record would not have been printed on his bankbook, said the bank.
The man insisted that he never took out the remaining amount and argued that the 2,000 yuan in interest would not have been accumulated if the balance was taken out.
The bank appealed to a higher court, after it was ordered after the first trial to pay back the remaining balance and interest.
The decision, however, was upheld by the Beijing Second Intermediate People's Court.
