China's Ministry¹ of Transport announced on Thursday regulations to tighten² supervision³ of ride-hailing drivers and platforms.

Starting from June 1, ride-hailing platforms and drivers will be included in the quality assessment⁴ system for taxi drivers, said Wang Xiuchun, a senior official of the ministry.

Ride-hailing companies should conduct stricter driver reviews to ensure the safety of passengers.

DiDi, the dominant⁷ player, claims more than 25 million rides each day through more than 21 million registered drivers and car owners.

DiDi announced new measures to improve passenger safety after a woman was raped⁸ and killed on May 6 by a DiDi driver.
