The number of newborns in China last year was 880,000 fewer than that of the previous year, according to a report released¹ by the National Health and Health Commission², reports bjnews.com.

According to the report, the number of new born babies in 2017 was 17.58 million, and over 50% of them were the second child in a family.

 

In 2016, the number of new born babies reached nearly 18.5 million, which was the largest number of new births in China since 2000, and the number of second children accounted for 45% of the total that year.

 

Since China's two-child policy went into force on January 1, 2016, couples have been allowed to have two children. That ended China's long-existing one-child policy.
