Three tiny moon rocks collected by a Soviet¹ space mission in 1970 are expected to sell for up to 1 million U.S. dollars at auction² in November, according to a report by CNN.

Sotheby's said that the tiny rocks, valued at 700,000 to 1 million U.S. dollars, are the only privately-owned moon rocks. 

 

The moon rocks were retrieved³ by the unmanned Luna-16 Mission in 1970. They were gifted by the Soviet Union to Nina Ivanovna Koroleva, the widow of former Soviet space program director Sergei Pavlovich Korolev, in recognition of her late husband's contribution to its space program. 

 

The rocks were first sold in 1993, and since then, have been in the hands of an unnamed American owner, who has now put them up for sale. According to Sotheby's, it is extremely rare for authentic⁴ lunar samples to be offered up for public sale.
