Chinanews, Beijing, Mar1. 14 – In recent years, the rapid economic and social development in Chinese mainland has attracted more girls from Taiwan Province. They can also study or work in the metropolises2 in the mainland.
According to the Global Times, intermarriage of people between mainlanders and Taiwanese has been on the increase gradually since 1989. Among the new couples in the early 1990s, most brides came from the mainland. In 2002, the Civil Affairs Bureau of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous3 Region found that among 1,300 couples of such intermarriage in Guilin, Liuzhou and Nanning in 2002, only two of the husbands were mainlanders. But in recent years, the trend has changed. Statistics collected by Taiwan in 2005 show that some 200 thousand women from the mainland married men from Taiwan in that year, and while 5,000 women from Taiwan married men from the mainland at the same time. Gao Ying, a woman writer who published several books introducing Chinese mainland, said that men from the mainland are more loyal and be responsible to families than from Taiwan. In Taiwan, there had been a TV show called “Taiwanese in Chinese mainland,” which demonstrated life of ordinary Taiwanese in the mainland. For Taiwanese considered cooking as women’s job in the family and are reluctant to make meal for their wives. But in the mainland, it is almost the other way round. Most of those “Taiwanese brides” in the mainland have received higher education, and some of them even hold an academic degree from European and American universities. They never view family in the traditional light, and are economically independent. Their husbands have similar social status, and also look at marriage in the modern perspective. Women from Taiwan not only find their love in the mainland, but also the hope to develop their careers here.
