Chinanews, Beijing,March 21 - Credit cards have changed the consumption view of the younger generation in China; however, many of of them have become "card slaves" as they are too dependent on credit cards.
The Social Investigation1 Center of China Youth Daily and the News Center of Sina.com conducted an online survey recently, finding that 23.7% of the responders are worried about becoming "card slaves". More than 34% of the responders have 2 or 3 credit cards, and another 20% even hold more than 3. Interestingly, in a survey conducted by Horizon Research in 2004, only 10% of Chinese urbanites had overdrawable bank cards. The traditional and conservative consumption view of Chinese and the difficulties in applying for such bank cards at that time prevented more Chinese from enjoying the conveniences of credit cards. Two years seem to have been enough to let Chinese, especially the young, embrace the new trend of payment by using credit cards. However, financial crises have arisen, too, as many of credit card holders3 overdraw2 much more money than they can afford. Xia Xiaoxue, 24, is a public servant who earns a monthly income of some 4,000 yuan, a rather decent income compared with her contemporaries. Still, she often spend too much. "I like shopping and dining out, and with credit cards I don't have to carry a thick wad of paper money with me any more, " said Xia. On the other hand, however, credit cards also make her loosen her hold upon her account, as they allow her to pay for anything she likes to buy no matter she has enough money or not. Around the bill's day every month, Xia will become anxious and start to remind herself of the importance of frugality4. However, every time she goes to a shopping mall, she will throw her anxiety to the four winds, and purchase whatever she likes.
