Chinanews, Beijing, Apr. 11 – Information shows that a considerable number of people born in the 1980s, who are regarded as the post-1980 generation, marry after a whirlwind romance. However, such marriage usually ends in divorce. Their problem has aroused the concern of sociologists, marriage experts, and people working in marriage administrative1 institutions, the China Youth Daily reported.
Here are some alarming figures. In 2006, a total of 24,952 couples got divorced. Among them, one-fifth had maintained their marriage for less than 3 years; one-third got divorced within 5 years after marriage; 970 couples divorced in less than one year after marriage; and 52 young couples ended their marriage even in less than a month. Among these divorced couples, a considerable number of them were born in the 1980s. In the survey, 90% of the divorced couples are both the single child in their family. “There is a high incidence of divorce among the only child group born in the 1980s. These people fall in love easily and their marriage also breaks up very soon. This is because most of them lack forbearance for each other,” a staff member working in a civil affairs bureau told this reporter. Among all people that sought consultancy from marriage experts, half were young people in their 20s. Most of them were not bothered by property settlement or child support problem, so divorce was a much easier thing for them, the staff member said. The high incidence of divorce among people of the post-1980 generation was directly linked with their lack of forbearance, since most of these children, who were the only child in their families, were often spoiled by their parents since very young, some experts said.
