Chinanews, Shenyang, Oct. 9 – A teacher from the United States recently chose to celebrate her marriage in a traditional Chinese way. Her marriage took place in late September when the bride was welcomed into the bridegroom's home in a large Chinese sedan chair.
The American teacher, called Mei Xidie in her Chinese name, came to teach in Huangbaiyu village a year ago, hoping to gain some information about the construction process taking place in the village, which is also a model village in Liaoning. She became the first English teacher that the village school has ever had since it was founded 60 years ago. In order to marry her, the bridegroom flew to China from the United States. When explaining why she chose China to have her wedding ceremony, Mei said that if she returned to the United States, then her local friends, and her pupils, too, wouldn’t be able to attend her wedding ceremony there. Through her one year of teaching1, local villagers began to like her. When they learned2 that she was about to marry, all villagers went to congratulate her. They established a special team for the occasion3, selecting the chefs, waiters and waitresses, and forming a Yangge dancing team. The couple will fly back to the United States soon. They have decided4 that starting from 2007, they will donate 2,500 yuan every year to support a junior high school student to study in senior high school.
