Chinanews, Beijing, April 19 - Beijing plans to exercise strict traffic control during the 2008 Olympic Games, when about 20% to 30% (1 million to 1.2 million) of vehicles will not be allowed to travel on the roads.
"Traffic control will help improve the air quality to guarantee a better city environment, and the control will not only be exercised over high-emission cars, but also on buses. Low-emission cars will not be encouraged to come out at that time," said Liu Xiaoming, vice1 director of Beijing Municipal2 Communications Commission3. Staff members and volunteers of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), athletes and audiences will be able to travel by the public transport for free during the Games, which will surely attract more people to travel by subway and buses instead of private cars. The rules for managing parking lots around the Olympic stadiums and gyms will be released4, soon. It is said that the daily growth of autos in Beijing has been 1,060 since last January 1, and currently5 there are 2.97 million of them here. The figure will break 3 million before the end of May.
