Chinanews, Kunming, May 9 – China’s first social anti-drug team was set up in Kunming, Yunnan Province recently. Yunnan is near the “Golden Triangle” region, which fact has made the province a key area suffering from drug scourge1. In order to check drug spreading in the region, the Yunnan government has proposed a public war against drugs in the next 10 years.
According to China’s Ministry2 of Public Security, heroin3 captured in Yunnan occupied 73% of China’s total amount of heroin captured in 2006. Yunnan also seized large amount of opium4 and methamphetamine last year. Experts point out that there are drug and AIDS problems existing in the province. So, Yunnan’s anti-drug authority endeavored to create new method to fight against drug-related crimes. The social anti-drug team, which was set up on April 30 is composed of 502 volunteers. The volunteers are also required to go through some basic trainings in anti-drug practice. Such training will begin in Yunnan later this year.
