Chinanews, Beijing, May 12 - There are millions of shifting population in big cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen in China, most of whom stay in rented apartments. However, expensive rents usually force two or more of them to share an apartment. Interestingly, it has become fashionable for young people to share apartments with an apartment-mate of the opposite sex.
Our reporter has logged on several online forums1 where people post solicitations for apartment-mates, finding that only 10% of them wish to share their apartment with someone of the same sex. Mostly, well-educated young men (82% of them under 32) with no girlfriends would like to share their apartments with young women. Statistics also show that 72% of them have no intention to buy houses in the next 3 years. However, young women don't care much about the gender2 of their future apartment-mates, though quite a lot of them would like to have male apartment-mates. "I have a bad temper, thus I often quarrel with girls, but boys are more tolerant. Besides, sharing an apartment with a man will give me a strong sense of security," said Li, a girl who wishes to rent a room in the Chaoyang District of Beijing.
