Chinanews, Beijing, May 15 – Garbage treatment is a big issue for China. In China, about 120 million tons of garbage are produced in urban areas every year and the amount is increasing by 8% year by year. Garbage produced in China now accounts for one-fourth of the total amount of garbage produced in the world. How to properly handle garbage has now become a big problem for the country.
Due to improper1 handling methods, about two-thirds of the 668 cities in China (excluding villages and towns) are surrounded by various types of garbage. The total amount of garbage produced in these cities has now reached 7 billion tons and occupies totally 800,000 mu (about 533, 333,360 square meters) of land. In Beijing, the total amount of garbage, if piled up, can form a mountain 36 hectares in area and 40 meters in height, said an official at the Environmental Sanitation2 Department under the Beijing Municipal3 Administration4 Commission5 when describing the garbage problem in Beijing. Compared with some industrial countries, which usually categorize garbage before handling them, most of the garbage produced in China is not properly categorized. As a result, China faces a tough task and has to spend a great deal more in processing the garbage later.
