Chinanews, Tangshan, May 21 – Tangshan, a city that was reduced to rubbles in a large earthquake in the 1970s, now decides to build a park to commemorate1 the disastrous2 event. The park will cover 40 hectares and will be built on the site where the earthquake actually occurred. The Tangshan municipal government announced last Friday that they now have begun to solicit3 ideas worldwide for the design of the park. The winner(s) will be awarded 20,000 US dollars.
On July 28, 1976, a big earthquake, which measured 7.8 on the Richter scale, rolled through the Tangshan city. About 240,000 people lost their lives, which was the most catastrophic event in the world’s earthquake history. It took Tangshan people 30 years to do the reconstruction4 work. Through building the commemorative park, local government hopes that all people will remember that part of the history and local government can pay more attention to the public’s mental needs and make efforts to build a “harmonious and safe environment for people living now,” an official from the Tangshan City Planning Bureau when giving an interview to a reporter from Chinanews Service.
