Chinanews, Beijing, May 24 - China has invested more than 500 million yuan on the poppy transplantation project in Myanmar and Laos, and more than 98,800 acres of poppy fields have been transformed into farmlands. Nowadays, the poppy fields in the Golden Triangle only take up 12% of the world's total, rather than 66% in 1998, according to the information released on May 22.
Besides, China and Southeast Asian countries have jointly1 cracked many transnational drug offenses2, particularly in the Golden Triangle area.
Advanced satellite sensing technology has been used to confirm the location of poppy fields. In 2006, China sent 10,000 tons of rice to north Myanmar, after the elimination3 of poppy fields there. 305 Myanmarese and Laotian anti-drug officials were trained that year in China.
