Chinanews, Beijing, June 15 - According to a report published on the website of the Ministry1 of Labor2 and Social Security (MOLSS), China will suffer a labor surplus in the future for a long time to come. During the 11th Five-Year Plan period (2006 - 2010), there will be an excessive labor forces of about 12 million every year.
The report is based on a survey of the employment of migrant workers and enterprises' job openings in the beginning of 2007, conducted by the MOLSS, and on the statistics collected by 120 job agencie, to give an overall analysis of employment situation in China. Labor force should be China's advantage in economic development due to its large population, and the baby boom in the 1950s and 1960s have provided the country with abundant labor force. Able-bodied worker population has taken up 65% of the total population since some 20 years ago, and the current situation will last for at least another 20 years. In the next 4 years, there will be a 20-million-strong new labor force entering the job market every year, and another 4 million workers who need to change jobs. However, with an 8% or 9% of annual economic growth, there will be only 12 million job vacancies3 available annually4. Rural areas will suffer from labor surplus, too, although the situation will not be as bad as in urban areas.
