Chinanews, July 2, Beijing – Zhao Boguang, one of the most famous cricket1 breeders in Beijing, is planning to host another cricket contest. Since 1988, Zhao has hosted 19 such events.

It was a tradition in ancient China to keep crickets2 as pets. Special games were also common for crickets to fight against each other. It is said that Chinese took to the cricket games as early as in the Qin Dynasty (221 – 206 BC). However, as time went on, some people began to use cricket games for gambling3, and many Chinese fell victim to it.

Zhao, being vice4 director of Beijing Cricket Committee, has contributed a great deal in making cricket games a formal sport event as cockfighting. In the first National Cricket Contest alone, 18 teams with their thousands of crickets attended the event.

Zhao now is working hard to prepare for the upcoming contest this year. “We will not only select the best crickets, but also crown the best cricket breeder in Beijing,” said Zhao.
