Chinanews, Shanghai, July 13 – An 18-year-old girl recently astounded1 her doctor by saying that she had taken induced abortions3 13 times in only 2 years.
“May be I could apply for a Guinness world record for that,” the girl said casually4. According to information gathered from Shanghai's first hotline opened for pregnant girls, 46% of the students say the knowledge they learned from physiology5 classes at school is not enough. Experts urge schools to open a sex education course for boys so that they can take responsibility for their behaviors. In this way, few girls might get pregnant, the Shanghai Morning Post reported. Recently, an 18-year-old girl went into a clinic room at No. 411 Hospital in Shanghai. At the hospital, Doctor Zhang Zhengrong, a volunteer for the hotline, was amazed by what the girl told her. “I have taken abortions 13 times in two years. I might be qualified6 to apply for the Guinness world record for that,” the girl said. It seemed that she was not bothered by it at all. She told the doctor that her first abortion2 was done with no anesthesia applied7. It was such a painful experience. Later, she often exchanged ideas with other pregnant girls and learned that she could take a painless abortion by taking pills. Now she could even tell the doctor what medicinal ingredients she needed in order to take an abortion. However, the doctor told her that if she took abortions repeatedly, she might suffer from gynecological diseases or ectopic pregnancy8. She might even not be able to give birth to a baby any more. “If you happen to become pregnant again, you should inform the doctors first,” Doctor Zhang told the girl. Nowadays, teenage boys and girls become sexually mature two years earlier than before. In addition, society is more open-minded about sex issue and things related with sex often appear in foreign films. As a result, more and more adolescents have experienced sex at an early age. Related information shows that 5-10% of boys and 3-8% of girls below the age of 19 have sexual experiences, said Dai Yaohong, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission for Children at Puberty. "Offering sex education to boys has become an urgent task now. We suggest that parents and school teachers can learn from a Swedish educational program, 'Education for Boys', in teaching their boys more knowledge about sex and sex morality, " Dai said.
