Chinanews, Beijing, July 19 – They appear to possess everything that people yearn1 for: fortune, talents, and fame. However, they are constantly put under great work pressure. They are the corporate2 managers.

A recent report shows that over 90% of the corporate managers in China often work overtime3. Nearly 50% of the managers say they often feel “worn out”, suffer from heavy mental pressure or are afflicted4 with some chronic5 diseases, the China Youth Daily reported.

Jointly6 released by the China Enterprise Confederation, the China Enterprise Directors Association, and the KM100 Market Research Company, the report, titled "Report on the Development of Corporate Managers in the Year of 2007", was issued at the 2007 China Corporate Managers Annual Forum7 held in Beijing on July 14-15.

The report is based on over 9,000 questionnaires sent to Chinese corporate managers who are members of the China Enterprise Confederation, said Sun Yanhu, deputy executive chairman of the China Enterprise Confederation.

“Of all those who respond to the survey, 80% are male, mostly at the age between 35 and 50, accounting8 for 65% of the total number of respondents, with 67% of them having at least a bachelor's degree,” Sun said.

The report shows that only 7% of the respondents work for regular hours. Half of them have to work for an extra one or two hours a day and 34% of them have to work for another 3-4 hours after regular working time. In addition, 8% of the managers have to work for an extra 5-7 hours a day and 1% of them have to work for even 8-10 additional hours daily.

“Generally speaking, managers of foreign-funded companies have to bear heavier work pressure than managers working in domestic companies. As the report shows, 60% of the managers in foreign-funded companies work for at least three hours more in addition to their usual working time. Managers in domestic private companies usually have to work for at least 5 hours more every day,” Sun said.

As a result of this hard work, only 50% of the corporate managers say they remain healthy both physically9 and mentally.
