Chinanews, Beijing, August 20 – Nowadays, snacks play an indispensable part in the diet of children in China, thus the Ministry1 of Health has composed the first official guide book on the recommended snacks for them.
In the past ten years, the consumption of snacks in China has greatly increased. It is said that 60% of kids aged2 between 3 and 17 have snacks every day, which provide 7.7% of their total energy intake3, 18.2% of fibrin, 17.9% of Vitamin C, 9.9% of calcium4, and 9.7% of Vitamin E.
However, taking too many snacks will cause obesity5, malnutrition6 and inappetence. Thus parents should only offer an appropriate amount of carefully chosen snacks to kids when they are hungry. Besides, snacks should be had 1.5 – 2 hours before launch or dinner.
The guide book categorizes snacks into 3: recommended, moderately restricted and strongly restricted. It is suggested that kids should take more dairies, fruits, vegetables or nuts instead of junk food.
