Chinanews, Beijing, August 21 – More and more Chinese are complaining about expensive housing in the country.
A young couple in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, bought their house 4 years ago. Since then they have had to save the better part of their income to pay the loan. “We have not traveled for once these years, nor have we bought any expensive clothes. In fact, most of the appliances in our house were used by our parents. Even in the hottest days in summer, we can’t afford to keep our air-conditioner on for long,” said they. Nowadays the abnormally high housing price in China not only harms people’s life quality, but also affects the overall economy of the country badly, as most people won’t have much money to spend on other consumer goods after they have bought houses of their own.. If nothing is done to curb1 the soaring housing price, it will eventually cause a fatal impact on the macro economic development of the country. Statistics show that averagely 20% of Zhejiangers’ expenditure2 was on housing, while their expenditure on other consumption items only increased by 10% last year, even lower than their annual income growth. A survey in 2005 reflected that the average spending on housing in Zhejiang province has increased by nearly 60 times in the past 5 years. However, housing price in China still keeps soaring, bringing a heavy psychological burden to bear on the residents, particularly young people. In fact, if housing price can be suppressed, China’s domestic consumption will surely increase a great deal.
