Chinanews, Beijing, August 24 – When Americans are calling out to get rid of bottled water, Chinese are spending a great deal of money on it.
Now China is the third largest bottled water consumer in the world. It is estimated that bottled water will generate a 30-billion-yuan market in 2007. Statistics also show that the sales value of bottled water in China increases by 30% every year. By 2010, Chinese will consume 10 million tons of bottled water, 60% of the amount consumed in the US at present. However, water security has become a threat in China, with 70% of its rivers and lakes having been polluted. The condition of ground water is not very good, either, after many years of excessive development. More than 20% of major cities in China have no proper water sources, and 33% of them are faced with water shortage. Water security has forced many Chinese to buy bottled water, despite the fact that there is an abundance of fake or unqualified bottled water in the market. Experts suggest that the central government should help the general public rebuild their confidence in the water supply by establishing investigation1 reports of waterworks and updating water supply systems. Actually, building a modern and dependable water system is much more economical than buying bottled water.
