Chinanews, Beijing, August 29 – According to Chen Lei, the Minister of Water Resources, most of China’s 85,000-odd reservoirs were built in the 1950s – 1970s, and are in bad need of maintenance. It is estimated that 37,000-plus reservoirs are in danger of falling into disrepair..
Quite a large number of reservoirs were built in the years when China adopted a policy of rash advance in socialist1 construction, besides, there was no one to repair them since their completion. Since 1998, China has invested 27.6 billion yuan to renovate2 2,381 reservoirs, and the renovation3 of 2,190 has been completed. In the next 3 years, another 6,200 reservoirs will be renovated4, including 1,200 big and medium-sized ones. Currently, the ministry5 plans to invest 51 billion yuan, of which 27 billion yuan will be allocated6 by the central finance, and the rest by local governments. The renovation of reservoirs will greatly enhance China’s capacity in fighting floods and guarantee its water supply.
