Chinanews, Beijing, September 3 – As Guangdong is an economically developed coastal1 province, many drug smugglers take it as a gateway2 of drug trafficking, including foreign ones. Since 2006, Guangdong police has confirmed and cracked 160 drug trafficking cases involving foreigners with 207 suspects arrested. In the first 6 months of 2007 alone, 102 foreign suspects were arrested in 75 cases, 316.7% more than the same period last year.
Statistics show that 58.8% of criminal cases involving foreigners in Guangdong are drug trafficking cases. Most of the suspects hide highly purified marijuana or heroine in their bodies. Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Zhuhai, the three major cities in the Pearl River Delta3, are the most seriously affected4 places, where More than 80% of the drug-trafficking cases have been cracked. A large proportion of the suspects are from less-developed African countries like Nigeria, the rest from Asian countries like Uzbekistan, Thailand and Iran.
