Chinanews, Beijing, September 4 – Though migrant workers have played an irreplaceable role in the urbanization and industrialization process of China, most of them still lead a hard life and it is very difficult for them to protect their rights.
Nearly 70% of migrant workers averagely work 10.2 hours a day, while another 10% work for 13 hours daily, with no extra pay. The income of 74% of them is between 580 yuan and 1,600 yuan. 70% of them work for private enterprises.
Many of them have received not much of education. Over 50% of them have only finished junior high or even elementary school, thus it is impossible for them to get the jobs with higher pay but requiring professional knowledge and skills. A large proportion of migrant workers work in construction fields or in the manufacturing industry.
What’s more, the administration of related government officials is not well practiced in many places in China. Many enterprises don’t sign contracts with migrant workers, and they are reluctant to cover migrant workers in their insurance system. Sometimes, it is very hard for migrant workers to get their wages. According to the reports of local media, some of the enterprises even give the sack to migrant workers injured at work.
