Chinanews, Beijing, Sept. 6 – Some people think that if China develops a large amount of liquid biofuel, it might affect grains price and the supply of grains and food security in China. In responding to this claim, deputy1 director of the State Development and Reform Commission2 Chen Deming said that in China, the materials used to make fuel ethanol are mostly old grains that have been stocked for many years. In future, China will mainly rely on non-grain crops to produce biofuel.
It takes a great number of grains to make biofuel. Many countries in the world try to make biofuel with corns. In the United States, for example, every year about 15 million tons of fuel ethanol are produced. In order to produce this fuel ethanol, the US has increased its corn production by reducing the planting area of beans. This has pushed up the price of some agricultural products and some oil-bearing crops. Chen said this at a news briefing held on Tuesday.
In China, land is very precious and China has not produced biofuel in the same way as the United States. Currently3, China has four plants that make fuel ethanol with grains. Every year, about 1.02 million tons of fuel ethanol are made through grains and most of the grains are old grains that have been stocked for many years. Among these 1.02 million tons of fuel ethanol, about 800,000 tons are made from corns and the rest are made from other grains or yams, Chen said.
In developing biofuel, China will not sacrifice its precious land resources and grains. In future, China will not depend on corns to develop bidfuel. Instead, it will use some crops other than grains to make the fuel. These crops include sweet sorghum4, Euphor biaceae, Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge, etc. Most of these crops grow in saline land or barren5 mountains. We can use these crops to make biofuels, Chen noted6.
