Chinanews, Beijing, Sept 8 – Among the 240 million students in China, one-fifth have financial problems due to various reasons. If we can provide funds to them, we are sponsoring them with a bright future. By doing so, we also help the students' families and our nation as a whole, said Zhang Baoqing, former vice1 minister of education and president of the China Education Development Foundation, on Thursday.
On Thursday, the China Education Development Foundation kicked off the Mary Study Assistance Plan in Beijing. According to this plan, the Maxleaf Company, a paper manufacturer based in Wuhan, will donate 200 million blank homework books to the China Education Development Foundation free of charge. The 200 million homework books are worth 60 million yuan. In recent years, Chinese government has taken a series of measures for helping2 poor students to finish their education. However, in order to do the task well, we realize that in many cases, not only the government should provide support, people from all walks of life should also play a part in this process. The work can be done well only if all parties in society work together, Zhang said. As the main person to advocate the state's student fund policy, Zhang had worked hard to support the policy when he served as the vice minister of education. At one time in a news briefing, he even criticized some local officials for failing to carry out their duties by name on a public occasion. Now, serving as the president of the China Education Development Foundation, he has continued to work hard to achieve the goal. “This is not a question of money. Everyone has the responsibility to do something to achieve the goal. It’s their duty to do so,” Zhang said.
