According to the Ministry1 of Commerce, averagely an urban couple spent 126,600 yuan on their wedding ceremony in 2006, including taking pictures, buying jewelries, renting wedding dresses, giving wedding feasts, decorating rooms, spending honeymoon2, and buying furniture and home appliances.

 

However, they spent even more on buying houses. Averagely, the housing expenditure3 of an urban young couple who got married in 2006 was 162, 900 yuan, while the average monthly income of a young couple was only 6,249 yuan at that time. That is to say, they spent 4 years total income on their wedding. Actually, most of them had to rely on the support from their parents to host their wedding ceremonies. The survey by the Ministry of Commerce also shows that the parents of 81.6% of young couples helped them in this aspect.
