Sept.21 - Starting this October, both riders and drivers of taxis in Beijing will no longer be allowed to smoke inside the vehicles, as part of a movement to fulfill1 the city's commitment to host a smoke-free Olympic Games next year.
The capital city is kicking off a "Green Taxi" activity this weekend, aiming to ban smoking in cabs, according to Thursday's The Beijing News. The activity is to be jointly2 sponsored by the city's Bureau of Health, Bureau of Transportation Management and the Transportation Law Enforcement Team. According to a regulation that is to come together with the "Green Taxi" weekend, both taxi drivers and passengers are forbidden to smoke inside taxis. Anyone who violates the regulation will be fined. Details of the upcoming penalty will be formulated3 by the Bureau of Transportation Management and the Transportation Law Enforcement Team. The details are expected to be revealed to the public on Sunday. The capital city issued a similar notice that targets the city's taxi drivers in early August, saying that drivers who were reported by passengers to have smoked inside the cabs would be fined up to 200 yuan, or about 27 dollars. The smoke ban for taxi passengers is a new complement4 to the no-cigarette-in-taxi move, which demonstrates Beijing's determination to make the big games green. However, some taxi drivers expressed their worries. Mr. Yang from the Beijing Yinhai Taxi Co. said that if he found passengers smoking in his cab, he would have to stop and wait until the person finish his cigarette. But he couldn't ask the passenger to get off because the taxi industry has its rule. Other drivers are even afraid that they might be revenged as people can easily get their contact information from the cards inside their cars. The ban on smoking in taxis is part of the project for the city to hold a smoke free Olympic Games in 2008. According to a draft plan of the project, all public traffic vehicles in the capital will be made smoke free next year. Smoking will be completely prohibited in the Olympic venues5 and selling cigarettes will also be forbidden in the training venues and living spaces of the athletes during the Beijing Olympics.
