Chinanews, Beijing, September 24 – According to a joint1 survey conducted by the Social Investigation2 Center of China Youth Daily and Sina.com, most Chinese will support themselves when they are old instead of depending on the government.
Most of the respondents say they will rely on commercial insurance or the savings3 deposit of their own. They will also get the help from their children. Only 20.2% think that they will partly depend on the government in their old age. “We are supposed to support ourselves when we become old, aren’t we?” said 49.7% of the respondents. However, old-age care still means great pressures, particularly for the single-child generation, as every couple of this generation will have to support 4 parents in the future. More than 59% of the respondents admit that old-age care is not easy, and 87.8% of them are worried about their future life. The statistics from the Ministry4 of Labor5 and Social Security show that in 2006, 80% of the 10 million poor senior citizens lived in rural areas. In fact, at present the living standard of 40% of rural elders is only 50% (or even lower) of the average level. The social security systm in China still doesn’t cover most of the rural population, who don’t have any income at all when they are old.
