Chinanews, Beijing, Sept 27 – In Shangqiu County, Henan, there is a village called Dong Sun Lou Village, about 2,000 people living there. Since the 1990s, many people living in the village have died from various cancers. Sometimes, five or six people might die in a year and at other times, more than 20 villagers might die in just one year. Recently, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention conducted an investigation1 in the village. It concludes that the high death rate in the village is attributed to the water pollution occurring in a local river, the China Youth Daily reported.
Wang Ziqing is a villager in Dong Sun Lou. He can’t remember how many funeral rites2 he has organized so far. He remembers that after he turned 48, more and more people in his village began to get one or another cancer. Many people died afterwards. Whenever someone died, Wang would arrive at the funeral scene, either to organize the funeral rites or to say goodbye to the dead person. “I felt so sad when I heard of the death of someone in my village,” Wang said to our reporterwearily. He had now turned 65. Once in a while he stops and shaks his hand, reluctant to recall the past. “Many people died young. It’s really a pity. I don’t know how long this situation will last.” “In my village, death becomes such a common thing,” Wang sobbed3, tears running down from his face. “I don’t know how many people have died in my village. The death news comes one after another.” Not only in Dong Sun Lou Village, since the 1990s, many nearby villages have also experienced the same thing. The cancer incidence rise quickly. People now call these villages as the cancer villages. “It is all because of the pollution,” said Wang. Although he himself couldn’t prove his conclusion from a scientific point of view, his intuition tells him that the cancer and death has something to do with the Shaying River running past the village. As to how closely the cancer incidence is related with the river pollution, a deputy director from the local public health bureau said they might need to carry out more scientific researches to back up the conclusion.
