Chinanews, Shanghai, Sept 29 – In China, more and more adolescents suffer from social anxiety disorder1. About 8% of people at ages of 13-24 are victims of social anxiety disorder, the rate being the highest among the youth, the Shanghai Evening Post reported.

In a recent meeting, Professor Zhang Wei from Sichuan University and his research team released their findings. The conclusion was made after the research group investigated 2,000 people aged2 13-24 (among those who participated in the survey, half were male and half were female).

At present, social anxiety disorder has become the third largest mental problem among Chinese people, right after depression and alcohol dependence3.

Social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, can be shown in various ways. For some people, it is shown by their reluctance4 to attend parties. For others, they feel uncomfortable working under other people's attention. Some people do not want to talk with strangers. Some do not want to use public toilets. There are still some who do not want to be the focus of public attention. Social anxiety disorder has greatly affected5 the health of people, especially young people. However, many parents and teachers have failed to give enough attention to the problem. They mistakenly think that their kids are just “too shy” or “too rebellious6.“ In many cases, they don't send their kids for medical treatment until things get worse.
