Oct. 7 - The new No. 5 Subway Line in Beijing, which runs through the heart of the city from north to south, will start to run on Sunday, according to the Beijing News.

Tickets for the 27.6-km-long subway line will cost only two yuan, or about 27 US cents, no matter how far passengers travel or how many times they transfer lines.

The launch of the new line coincides with the cutting of subway fares from three yuan to two yuan across the city, in a bid to boost public transportation, ease road congestion1 and improve air quality before the Olympics.

The first train is scheduled to depart at 5:00 am from the northern terminus Tiantongyuanbei and the last one at 22:48 pm. Meanwhile, the first train will leave at 5:20 am from the southern terminus Songjiazhuang and the last one at 23:11 pm.

Construction of the No. 5 Subway Line began in December 2002, costing 12 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) to build.
