Chinanews, Beijing, Oct. 21 – China might become the second largest consumption country in the world. Many global companies involved in consumer goods making realize that in order to expand their market share in the world, they shouldn't neglect the Chinese market. However, many consumer goods manufacturers try to promote their business by expanding the sales network to seek for short-term gains. They neglect the fact that Chinese consumers have changed greatly, says a recent report released by the Boston Consulting Group, the China Youth Daily reported.
The report tries to focus on Chinese people's consumption motives1 and consumption trend. It points out that Chinese people's consumption habits are dominated by two trends, consumption upgrade and treasure hunting. The report comes to the conclusion after investigating 4,000 consumers from 13 cities across China. The report says that Chinese people are trying to upgrade their consumption structure, while US and European consumers are doing the opposite. By upgrading consumption structure, it means that Chinese people are willing to spend more money to buy expensive goods. Through investigation2, the report finds that in China, the number of consumers that plan to upgrade their consumption is six times the number of consumers who plan to cut down their expenses. There are three factors that contribute to these phenomenon. The first reason, which might also be the most obvious reason, is that as Chinese people make more income with economic growth, they are willing to spend more money on some new products or expensive things; the second reason is that in China, the price of ordinary goods which target at ordinary Chinese is much lower than similar goods in the West and ordinary goods dominate the sales market. Due to its large market share and low price, there is much room for people to upgrade their consumption structure. In addition, the different consumption habits among different generations also make this consumption upgrade possible. In China, ten years serve as a division line for two generations of people and ten years can really make a change in people's consumption habits. On the other hand, the rich and the poor can also have very different consumption habits, too. While rich people's expenditure3 on food and clothes might be three times that of the poor, their spending on luxury goods can be as many as 10 times, even 20 times, that of the poor. In order to show off their wealth to their friends and relatives, rich people are willing to spend money buying such products which can bring them fame and social prestige.
