Chinanews, Beijing, Oct 24 – October 22 marked the tenth International Stuttering Awareness1 Day. Statistics show that in the world, the incidence rate for adults to become stutterers is 1%. Based on this figure, it is estimated that in China, there are about 13 million people who stutter, while in Beijing, the number of stuttering people is about 100,000, the Beijing Youth Daily reported.
Since stuttering people can not speak fluently, many of them think that they have got some physical defects, or are the handicapped people. They mistakenly think that the disease can not be cured. They suffer from their stuttering problem and some even want to end their own lives. At present, doctors around the world have not found a way to cure people of their stuttering problem. In China, the number of medical institutions that serve to treat the stuttering problem is rather limited. As a reult, many stuttering people in China find that they can find no place to cure their problem, said Song Luping, doctor at Beijing Rehabilitation2 Research Center, who is also honorary president of the China Stutter Association.
