Chinanews, Guangzhou, Oct. 31 - 103-year-old Zhang Donglai has lived alone in a mountain area located in Heyuan, Guangdong Province for 27 years. He has just held his first birthday celebration together with his fellow villagers since 1980.
Zhang revealed that as a wild ox had destroyed his old wooden house somewhere in the mountain 27 years ago, he could not but rebuild a new house on present site. From then on, he said that he became a vegetarian1 in living in the mountain for over 20 years. Local government now grants him a subsidy2 of 100 yuan every month, occasionally he collects odds3 and ends from refuse heaps to sell to the salvage4 station to earn some pocket money. Zhang said he had seldom suffered from illness since he moved there. He said at first he hadn’t wanted to hold his birthday party as he thought it would cost a lot of money, but his fellow villagers insisted on holding the party in his honor. 60 years ago on Oct. 29, Zhang came to the mountain village as a refugee during the civil war, and Oct. 29, the date thus had been regarded as Zhang’s birthday by his fellow villagers.
