Chinanews, Shanghai, Nov. 1 – Compared with the 1970s generation, Shanghai's female college students born in the 1980s display more masculine features.

The findings are revealed in a report recently released at the second Shanghai Women Forum1 held in Shanghai Second Polytechnic2 University on Tuesday. According to this report, girl students born in the 1980s are more independent and decisive than those born before. They are ambitious, display leadership skills and are willing to take risks—features said to be characteristic of the masculine gender3.

Recently, a poll was carried out among 800 female students who came from 12 colleges in Shanghai. The result shows that compared with the previous generation, girl students born in the 1980s have quite different views with regard to their gender role. 31.5% of the girl students display both feminine and masculine features, which is 16 percentage points higher than what was showed in a similar survey done nine years ago. At that time, most of the respondents to the survey belonged to the 1970s generation.

Today, girl students display more masculine features and this is the result of a changing society. In today's society, there are more competitions and many girl students are taught to be determined4, self-respectful and self-supporting from a very early age. Rather than that they tend to be more like men, it should be said that their changing characters are the result of a changing society, some experts say.

While girl students display more masculinities, they still place great emphasis on family values. In the report, 52.7% of the girl students say family is the most important thing in their life and 18.9% of them regard affection as their priority. In addition, 16.2% of the girl students focus on their personal development. Most girl students in the 1980s generation are very much concerned with issues like family and child-raising.

While people of the 1980s generation claim to be novel and different from the previous generations, on the other hand, they still respect traditional values in some aspects. When their modern values conflict with traiditonal ideas, they might be placed in a dilemma5. People in society should not make indiscreet remarks to them. Rather, they should judge this group from an objective point of view and give them guidance whenever necessary, experts say.
