Migrant workers' mentality more harmonious than urbanites

Chinanews, Beijing, Nov. 12 – The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences recently issued a report on Chinese people's mental status. The report shows that in China, migrant workers' mental condition tends to be more harmonious¹ than that of city dwellers², the Science Times reported.

The research judges Chinese people's mental status from mainly four aspects, one's self-satisfaction, interpersonal relationship, family relationship and one's attitude towards society. The interpersonal relationship is the most important among the four.

According to the research, Chinese people's mental harmony is, generally speaking, within the acceptable range. Despite this, there is still much room for improvement of people's mental harmony.

Of the four elements included in the research, family atmosphere has won the most score, indicating that Chinese people are most satisfied with their family relationship.

The research shows that people living in different regions are found with varying conditions in mental harmony. Generally speaking, people in the east coastal³ region are in a less mentally harmonious condition than those in the middle and western regions.

And it seems there is a trend that people's mental harmony condition deviates⁴ from their economic condition. According to information released by the National Statistics Bureau, people in the eastern region enjoy a much higher per capita GDP figure than those in the western region, however, as the report shows, their mental condition is less harmonious compared with people in the middle and western regions.

The trend also works when talking about city dwellers and migrant workers. While city dwellers are generally better off than migrant workers, their mental condition is far less harmonious than the latter. This is shown by the fact that in cities, people's interpersonal relationships are rather loose, city people tend not to trust each other and their attitude towards society often changes.
