Chinanews, Beijing, Nov. 13 – More and more dead Manchurian tigers are put in the icy house at the Manchurian Tiger Garden in Heilongjiang Province. China currently forbids tiger trading. On the other hand, tiger raiser Wang Ligang does not want to bury them as he believes that even dead tigers can be useful. What can he do?
Being the general manager of the Manchurian Tiger Garden, Wang has raised about 800 Manchurian tigers in the garden. It is the largest Manchurian tiger raising base in the world, the Beijing News reported. When a tiger died, he would put its body into the freezer. At present, there are about 200 dead tiger bodies kept in the freezer. Most of these tigers died of illness, old age or in a fight. Wang does not want to bury them, as he thinks it will be a big waste “not to use these valuable tiger resources.” Every year, Wang will write a report to the State Forestry1 Bureau asking to lift the ban on tiger trade. However, none of his reports has been approved. Meanwhile, the garden meets a fund shortage. “So far, we owe about 20 million yuan to the bank.” The operational costs for it are about 20 million yuan a year. Right now, the garden can only make ends meet with ticket selling and government subsidy2. “If we are allowed to sell these dead tigers, we will solve our financial problem,” Wang said. The tigers' bodies can be sold to related institutes for scientific researches, tiger bones can be used as medicinal ingredients, and tiger skins sold to animal collectors, Wang said. However, at present, China forbids any form of tiger trade. Despite this, Wang still keeps all the dead bodies in the freezer, hoping that some day, China might lift the ban on tiger trade. The Manchurian Tiger Garden was formerly3 known as the China Hengdao Hezi Feline4 Animal Breeding Center. The breeding base was not located in the city's downtown area. Rather, it was established in deep mountains. The raising center was jointly5 established by the former Ministry6 of Forestry (now known as the State Forestry Bureau) and the former Heilongjiang Foreign Trade Department (now known as the Heilongjiang Provincial7 Department of Commerce) in 1986. At that time, there were only eight tigers in the breeding center.
